The election process in Uttar Pradesh took off on Thursday with 56 candidates filing their nominations.
"That is the normal trend on the first day," said Noor Mohammad, the state's chief election officer.
A total of around 4000 nominations are expected for the 403 assembly seats that will go to poll in February.
Nominations will close on January 23, following which scrutiny will commence and withdrawals will be allowed until January 28.
As per the schedule, polling in 92 constituencies spread over 15 districts in western UP will be held on February 14. This will be followed by a second round on February 18, when 145 constituencies will go to polls in 28 districts in central and eastern UP.
The last and final round will be held on February 21, when voting will take place in 186 assemblies spread over the remaining 27 districts in eastern UP.
"This is the first time that electronic voting machines will be used in each of the 117,000 polling stations across the state," Mohammad said.
About 500,000 million government officials and teachers will be deployed to conduct the elections.
