Two Dutch nationals, believed to be terrorists, were shot dead by Border Security Force jawans early on Sunday near Dalgate in Srinagar.
A BSF spokesman said Bakiowali Ahmad and El-Hassanowi Khalid attacked two BSF jawans with knives. "The BSF jawans retaliated and killed the two foreigners on the spot."
Ahmad and Khalid, police sources said, arrived in Srinagar from Delhi by road and registered with the foreigner's registration office in Srinagar on January 6. "They had arrived from Amsterdam on December 26 last year," the sources added.
The bodies have been taken to a hospital and the Dutch embassy in Delhi has been informed.
Inspector General of Police Dr Ashok Bhan said: "Investigations to establish their links with specific terrorist organisations have begun." He added that two credit cards and cellular phones have been recovered during the search of the houseboat the two had rented.
