Blast in HC compound, 18 killed
in J&K

A powerful grenade, targeted at a security vehicle, missed its mark and exploded in the compound of the Jammu and Kashmir high court, while eighteen people were killed since Thursday night in militancy-related incidents.

Two terrorists and a newly elected sarpanch were killed and four securitymen injured in Jammu region since Thursday night, an official spokesman said

The spokesman said terrorists hurled a grenade towards a security vehicle parked outside the boundary wall of the high court near the busy Jehangir Chowk. But the grenade missed the target and exploded in the compound of the court.

Terrorists also hurled a grenade towards a security picket at Karan Nagar in downtown Srinagar. No one was injured in the blast, he said.

Security forces shot dead six terrorists of the Hizbul Mujahideen in an encounter during search operations at Lakshubahak-Doodhkachan in Anantnag district, the spokesman said, adding arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain.

Two terrorists of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami, including a Pakistani national, were killed by the army at Kapran in Anantnag on Friday, he said, adding a security jawan and a civilian were also killed in the shootout.

In the third encounter, the spokesman said a sub-inspector of the Border Security Force was killed when terrorists ambushed a patrol party at Shadipora in Pulwama district. The securitymen fired back, killing one militant.

The spokesman said security forces shot dead two terrorists in an encounter at Sain Sammat village of Rajouri district in Jammu region on Thursday. Two securitymen, including a policeman, were also injured in the incident.

Terrorists shot dead a newly elected sarpanch, Abdul Karim, inside his house at Said-Bakra in Bufliaz sector of Poonch district on Friday, he said.

He said two policemen were injured in a terrorist attack at Marmat in Doda district on Thursday night.

During a search of the area, security forces found a powerful improvised explosive device weighing 20 kg and defused it, the spokesman added.
