J&K administration reviews contingency plans

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

The law and order situation in the Kashmir valley and the monitoring of essential services in the event of a war with Pakistan were discussed at a high-level meeting in Srinagar on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Governor G C Saxena and was attended by Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chief Secretary Ashok Jaitley, state police chief A K Suri and senior officials of the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force.

Addressing the meeting, Saxena said India was waging a war against terrorism and not against any country.

He said, "The people of the country hope that a solution comes out as a result of the diplomatic and political strategy adopted by the Centre."

He urged for "close coordination between civil and army officers to provide rescue and relief measures to the masses in the event of any eventuality".

Abdullah enquired about the measures taken by the administration to ensure the availability of rations and medical facilities in the border areas.

He directed the divisional and district administration to construct community and household bunkers in areas along the Line of Control.

The meeting was informed that rations and other essentials to last ten months had been transported to border and inaccessible areas.
