More than 70,000 people migrate from border areas in J&K

More than 70,000 people, including women and children, have migrated from border villages in Jammu and Kashmir due to the heavy exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani troops along the international border and the Line of Control (LoC) during last three weeks, official sources said on Tuesday.

Also terrorised by the build up by Pakistani troops across the border, these people deserted their homes in border villages in five districts of Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch and Baramulla in the state and fled to safer places in adjoining villages or moved into government accommodation, the sources said.

The sources said the maximum migration has taken place in Jammu district with about 22,000 people in the Akhnoor sector, 12,000 in the Pargwal sector and 7000 in the Samba sector.

Next on the list is Kathua district with 12,000 people, Poonch district with 11,000, Rajouri district with 6000 and Uri area of Baramulla district with nearly 5000 persons, the sources said, adding some migration has also taken place from border villages of Kupwara district in the Kashmir valley.

The state government has provided relief and rehabilitation facilities to these hapless people and instructed district administrations to gear up to tackle the situation.

Besides providing seven kilograms of wheat, two kilograms of rice and ten litres of kerosene per person per month, the government has also decided to give Rs 200 rupees per head on a monthly basis, the sources said.

In addition, two blankets are provided to a family, they added.
