At least two militants and one army soldier died when a group of fidayeen stormed a heavily guarded army camp at Trehgam in the northern border district of Kupwara on Tuesday morning.
Heavy exchange of fire was continuing inside the camp when this report was filed.
The camp and its surrounding areas have been cordoned off and reinforcements have been rushed to the spot.
Source said three fidayeen militants hijacked a mini-bus near Kralpora in Kupwara and drove to the camp at Trehgam. Seconds after the bus came to a halt outside the camp gate, the militants began hurling grenades and opened fire at the guards, killing one of them on the spot.
By this time, soldiers inside the camp had taken positions. As the militants tried to enter the camp, two of them were shot dead. The third, however, managed to sneak in.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
