US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Friday that he might appoint a special envoy to India and Pakistan who would try and defuse tension between the two neighbours.
A decision to this effect would be taken after the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit in Nepal.
"We are anxious to see the situation stabilise," Powell said. "We hope the mobilisations halt quickly."
"There are some positive signs. But this is still a dangerous situation" the secretary of state said.
