Vajpayee arrives in Kathmandu for SAARC meet

Josy Joseph in Kathmandu

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday afternoon from Lucknow for attending the South Asian Association Regional Cooperation summit beginning on Friday.

Vajpayee arrived a little after 3 pm local time in a special aircraft with his family members and officials.

The prime minister landed at the Tribhuvan international airport to be received by Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Indian ambassador to Nepal IP Singh and other senior dignitaries.

The prime minister and his family visited the Pashupati Nath temple later.

The famed temple is a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus both in India and Nepal.

The prime minister would meet Deuba in the evening for a bilateral meeting.

The meeting would focus on terrorism.

India has been openly supporting Nepal's anti-Maoist operations. Nepal sympathises with India and supports it actions against terrorists.

Later in the night, Vajpayee will call on King Gyanendra at the Narayanahiti palace. The meeting would be followed by a dinner to be hosted by the King in honour of Vajpayee.

The PM and his family would be staying at the Annapoorna suite of Hotel Soaltee Crown Plaza, where General Pervez Musharaf is also scheduled to stay.
