India will push for effective implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution on tackling the menace of terrorism at the two-day meeting of SAARC foreign ministers ahead of the grouping's summit level conclave commencing in Kathmandu on January four.
New Delhi will forcefully emphasise the need to comprehensively address the issue of terrorism, which has threatened peace and security in the region, officials said.
The SAARC foreign secretaries have recommended to the ministerial meet the importance of effecting sweeping changes in the Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism signed by the member states in 1987.
Pakistan and Bangladesh have yet to enact national legislations as mandated by the convention. The foreign secretaries have suggested that legal experts from the seven-member grouping meet in Colombo soon to discuss steps to update the convention.
Indian officials on Wednesday maintained that no decision has been taken on a bilateral meeting between External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Abdul Sattar on the sidelines of the summit.
Singh will offer prayers at the famous Pashupathinath temple soon after his arrival in Kathmandu later on Wednesday and move straight for the ministerial meet.
