Sabarmati Express bogie set on fire in Gujarat, 30 dead

Vikram Vakil in Surat and Dilip Gohil in Rajkot

Thirty persons died and more than a dozen injured when miscreants set fire to a bogie of the Sabarmati Express near Godhra station in Gujarat on Wednesday morning, a railway official told rediff.com.

A number of kar sevaks returning to Ahmedabad from Ayodhya were travelling by in the train, which originates in Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident occurred at around 0830 hours when some miscreants stopped the train outside Godhra station and targetted the kar sevaks. The situation deteriorated when one of the bogies was set on fire.

The situation became tense as news of the incident spread to other parts of the state prompting the state government to initiate precautionary security measures.

Security has been tightened in Godhra and other parts of Gujarat.

The VHP, which is at the forefront of the Ram temple movement, has indicated that it will call for a Gujarat bandh on Thursday to protest against the incident.

The organisation's core committee would meet at 1600 hours in Ahmedabad to review the situation, said Jaydeep Patel, general secretary of the VHP's state unit.
