Sri Lanka and LTTE enter into truce pact

Norway's initiative to broker peace in Sri Lanka bore fruit on Thursday with the island nation entering into a ceasefire agreement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, officials said.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe gave his consent to a memorandum of understanding, which Norway prepared after holding talks with the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.

Sources said the LTTE, too, had given its consent to pact which called for a cessation of hostilities. The agreement will come into affect after Norway makes a formal announcement that it has received a green light from both the parties.
