Militants holed up in mosque in Baramulla

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

The army on Sunday surrounded a mosque at Amberpora Tarzu Sopore in the northern Baramulla district, where two militants are holed up, according to police sources.

The sources said heavy firing exchanges were continuing between the holed up militants and the security forces, who have thrown a cordon around the mosque.

Senior police officers who rushed to the spot tried to persuade the holed up militants to surrender.

Repeated announcements were made on loud speakers asking the militants to surrender.

However, sources said the militants refused the offer and instead opened fire on the troops outside.

On January 9, security forces had gunned down a holed up militant, while another was arrested in a serious condition during a siege of a mosque at Bamrood in Baramulla district.

"We have sealed all exit routes around the mosque. The operation will continue," a police officer, on condition of anonymity, said.

Meanwhile, at least 13 militants and two army soldiers were killed in separate encounters in past 24 hours.
