Eleven detained for December 2 Mumbai blast

December 26, 2002 17:13 IST

Police have detained eleven people in connection with the December 2 blast in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, which claimed two lives.

Mumbai police Commissioner M N Singh had said on December 24 that three persons had been detained. The police on Thursday said that eight more had been detained at Washim in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

Home ministry sources said police teams have been sent to Aurangabad, Parbhani and other parts of Maharashtra to nab others involved in the conspiracy.

The police, however, clarified that the accused have been detained for interrogation and not arrested.

Two days back, the police commissioner had disclosed involvement of a fundamentalist group, but ruled out the Inter-Services Intelligence's hand in the explosion. He also hinted that the same group was also involved in the Mumbai Central blast that left 25 injured.

Sources said one of the detenues was operating from Saudi Arabia.

Though Singh said a fundamentalist group was involved in the twin explosions in the first week of December, the police refused to comment whether it was handiwork of the outlawed Students' Islamic Movement of India.
