Protests in Kashmir against death sentence in Parliament attack case

Protest demonstrations were held on Wednesday in Sopore, Kupwara and Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, the native places of the three persons sentenced to death in the Parliament attack case by a Delhi court.

People came out on the streets and shouted slogans, official sources said, adding the demonstrators dispersed "after some time".

Separatist leader Shabir Shah and a number of people visited the residence of the three convicts, they said. Shah also led one of the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference demanded an impartial probe at an international level into the attacks on Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and Parliament.

Commenting on the verdict in the case, the separatist amalgam in a statement said, "No freedom loving person can be involved in such acts."

It alleged that these and other similar attacks were carried out by Indian agencies to "suppress the freedom struggle".

The Kashmir Bar Association, a constituent of the Hurriyat, has called for a complete shutdown throughout the valley on Thursday to protest the death sentences.

Lawyers as a mark of protest would hold demonstrations at all judicial headquarters, the association said in a statement.

Lawyers in the valley abstained from the courts on Wednesday to protest against the conviction.
