Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah led a peaceful protest march in Srinagar against the alleged human rights violations and the recent high court decision on restoring property rights to Kashmiri women marrying a person from a different state.

The procession that passed through the summer capital was attended by scores of people who shouted pro-freedom slogans and were carrying placards saying, "We want freedom" and "Stop human rights violations".

The district administration allowed Shah's protest march to proceed smoothly till the protestors dispersed near Regal Chowk.

Speaking to reporters in Lal Chowk, Shah demanded immediate release of all the detained Kashmiri separatists lodged in various jails saying that they were, "detained on flimsy grounds for several years in utter disregard to basic human rights in Kashmir".

A division bench of the high court had recently held that the Permanent Residence law debarring local women from owning or buying property in Jammu and Kashmir once they marry a non-resident was "against the spirit of Constitution as it was based on gender bias".

Under the law, however, local men would continue to have property rights even if they choose a spouse from a different state.
