Beating up of MP: Speaker tells govt to act immediately

December 11, 2002 14:18 IST

An adamant opposition seeking immediate suspension of the police official responsible for allegedly beating up of JD(U) member D P Yadav during a farmers' demonstration in Delhi on Monday, disrupted proceedings in the Lok Sabha for the second day on Wednesday even as Speaker Manohar Joshi directed the government to act immediately.

After an impromptu discussion on the issue for half-an-hour during Question Hour, Joshi asked Vijay Kumar Malhotra, chairman of the the House Committee, set up on Tuesday to probe the matter, to hold the meeting at 1300 IST instead of 1600 IST on Wednesday.

"This is a serious matter and the government is prepared to accept the interim report of the House Committee," he said, adding he would also watch the cassette in which a police official was seen directing policemen to resort to a lathi charge.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, Ramji Lal Suman and Chandranath Singh (both Samajwadi Party)
and Prabhunath Singh (Samata Party) submitted a notice for an adjournment motion demanding suspension of the police
officer involved in the lathi charge on farmers.

Raghunath Jha (Samata) demanded immediate action against the concerned police officer and requested the Speaker to view the cassette. Supporting Jha, his party colleague Prabhunath Singh accused the government of defending the officer as he was related to a Union minister.

The notice was disallowed by the Speaker who directed the Committee to meet at 1300 IST instead of 1600 ISt on Wednesday.
