Nawaz Sharief withdraws nomination

The former prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharief, has withdrawn from the country's October 10 general election, a statement from his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz said on Saturday.

"I have decided to withdraw my nomination papers filed and duly accepted for the forthcoming elections," the statement said.

"This decision is aimed at lodging my strong protest against the unethical, illegal and unconstitutional measures of [the] military regime under the garb of restoring 'true democracy'," it said.
