Jamaat appeals to India, Pak to start talks

Separatist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday appealed to India and Pakistan to shun 'obduracy' and initiate a dialogue process involving the 'genuine representatives' of Jammu and Kashmir to 'work out a just, realistic and honourable solution' to the Kashmir 'dispute'.

At the end of its two-day annual meeting in Srinagar, the separatist outfit contended that the resolution of the Kashmir issue was essential for 'viable peace' in South Asia.

The Jamaat said the 'festering' [Kashmir] issue had caused loss of life and property and pushed the people of India and Pakistan into poverty and backwardness as a major portion of budget of the two countries was being spent on defence.

It also demanded action against security forces found involved in acts of human rights violations.
