Over 130 houses gutted as ultras set J&K village on fire

Over 130 houses were gutted when Hizbul Mujahideen militants set an entire village in the hills of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir on fire, official sources said on Thursday.

Militants belonging to the Shakeel Ansari faction of the pro-Pakistan militant outfit set fire to houses in Gandh-Bihota village in the Marmat mountains on Tuesday night, the sources told PTI in Jammu.

No loss of life was reported in the incident, they said, adding 132 houses and other structures were gutted in the fire affecting 700 people of 112 families.

Doda and adjoining areas on Thursday observed a bandh in protest against the incident and demonstrations were held in many places in the area, the sources said.

Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, accompanied by state police chief A K Suri, visited the site of the incident on Thursday afternoon and promised help to reconstruct the houses, sources said.

He assured the villagers that a security picket would be set up in the area, they said.
