Sati incident: NCW delegation unable to meet even a single eyewitness

A four-member delegation of the National Commission for Women, which visited Tamoli Patna village, about 60 km from Panna, on Friday to investigate Tuesday's sati incident by 65-year-old Kuttu, was unable to find a single eyewitness to the incident.

However, the delegation led by its chairperson Purnima Advani, and including members Anasuya Uikey, Padma Seth and Babi Rani Maurya, was told by villagers that the incident did not appear to be pre-planned but something that occurred on the spurt of the moment.

The delegation also met Charandas, the policeman who was allegedly stoned by villagers when he tried to pull out Kuttu from the funeral pyre of her husband Mallu Nai.

The villagers told Advani and the NCW members three companies of the police were deployed in the village causing a fear psychosis among the residents.
