Sushil Kumar Shinde, the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition parties, on Thursday called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalithaa seeking her party's support for his bid.
Shinde later told reporters that the contest for the Vice-President's post was a fight between secularism and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
"I sought Jayalalithaa's support in the polls as she is one of the strong supporters of secularism," Shinde said.
Asked whether there was any political significance on his meeting with Jayalalithaa, who had already declared AIADMK's support to the National Democratic Alliance-supported candidature of Bhairon Singh Shekawat, he said, "I do not see any signal or significance."
He said he would also seek her party's support for his candidature despite Trinamool Congress announcing that it would boycott the vice-presidential polls.
