VHP now asks Muslims not to eat beef

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Tuesday asked Muslims to stop eating beef and return the three disputed sites at Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi as a precondition for peaceful coexistence with Hindus.

"There are so many other animals to eat. Why should they insist on slaughtering and eating cows, which are revered by Hindus?" VHP senior vice-president Giriraj Kishore said when asked what Muslims should do to ensure peaceful coexistence.

"Let them also return to us our shrines at Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi," Kishore said after a meeting with the National Commission for Minorities.

Asked whether fulfilment of the three conditions would be sufficient to foster Hindu-Muslim unity, Kishore said: "First let them do it. Then we will see."
