FBI to train ISI operatives

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation will train Pakistani intelligence personnel in modern probing techniques as it was felt that the present operational capabilities of the Inter-Services Intelligence were insufficient to crack down on terrorist groups.

Authorities in Pakistan were entering into a formal alliance in this regard with the US administration, Pakistani daily Dawn reported.

"Pakistan was compelled to request the FBI and the Central Intelligence Agency to provide technical assistance to its intelligence and law-enforcing agencies to strengthen its campaign against terrorism," the newspaper said.

It was felt that investigative machinery was simply incapable of delivering in ''highly-sensitive, anti-terrorism operations'. Scores of FBI personnel are currently involved in such operations across Pakistan.

Quoting government sources, the Dawn said the presence of FBI and CIA officials in Pakistan had substantially increased since the September 11 attacks on New York City and Washington.

The FBI was engaged in operations beyond their usual areas of responsibility with the US mission. They were working in close coordination with the ISI and police.
