Explosion rocks Tribune office in Srinagar

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

A powerful grenade explosion inside the Srinagar office premises of Tribune, a Chandigarh-based daily, triggered panic in the press enclave on Thursday afternoon.

Ahsan Fazili, a correspondent with the newspaper escaped the explosion miraculously, receiving only minor splinter injury.

Fazili said that a youth came inside the office premises to drink water.

"He went near the tap behind my office and later started running. I also ran and seconds later there was a blast," he said.

Police sources said that a lone militant hurled a grenade at the office and later escaped.

Police and paramilitary forces have rushed to the spot.

In 1995 an explosion occurred in the adjacent office of the then BBC correspondent Youssuf Jameel.

Jameel received serious injuries in the blast, while his friend Mushtaq Ali, who worked with ANI died.
