Counter-insurgents kill five people in Baramulla

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Counter-insurgents gunned down at least five villagers on Tuesday night at village Balhama in northern Baramulla district, reports reaching Srinagar on Wednesday morning said.

Three people received injuries.

Police sources said a group of counter-insurgents accompanied by the security forces raided houses in the village on Tuesday night and tried to arrest some persons. However, the villagers resisted it and the counter-insurgents allegedly opened fire killing four people on the spot.

The four injured were immediately rushed to the hospital, where a critically wounded villager died.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) K Rajendra told rediff.com that the Baramulla district police chief, Showkat Ahmad Malik, has rushed to the spot.

The killings have triggered high tension in the village and adjoining areas.
