Blast in Srinagar-Jammu highway kills three

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

At least three people were killed and 17, including six armymen, hurt in a massive explosion in the main market at Awantipore on Srinagar-Jammu highway in southern Pulwama district on Tuesday morning.

Police sources said the injured have been rushed to various hospitals in Pampore and Srinagar for treatment. The condition of five seriously wounded is stated to be critical.

Police said that militants set off an improvised explosive device, while an army vehicle was passing on the road.

"The blast shook us. We ran for cover. I saw dead and injured around," Mohammed Sultan, a local resident, said.

The blast follows the massive post-encounter explosion at Laroo Jageer Tral on Tuesday, which resulted in serious injuries to 25 members of the security forces, including five officers of the paramilitary Border Security Force.

One special police officer succumbed to his injuries late on Monday.
