SC stays proceedings in Karunanidhi arrest case

In a blow to the Tamil Nadu government, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted ex-parte stay of further proceedings before the Madras high court, where the state government has questioned the jurisdiction of National Human Rights Commission in the case relating to the arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S P Bharucha, Justice N Santosh Hegde and Justice D M Dharmadhikari issued the order when the matter came up for hearing.

The Tamil Nadu government last year had moved the Madras high court questioning the jurisdiction of the Commission, which had issued notice to the state government seeking report on the alleged human rights violation and contravention of laws by state police while arresting Karunanidhi.
