Strike brings Jammu to a grinding halt

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Life in Jammu city was brought to a grinding halt on Monday by a strike call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the Panthers Party to condemn Saturday's suicide attack that left 10 dead.

The government had ordered closure of all educational institutions to maintain law and order. The security in the city remained tight through the day.

Attendance in government offices was also thin. Security around religious places in the city was tight.

At least ten persons, including four security personnel and two militants, were killed on Saturday when militants hurled grenades and sprayed bullets on security personnel and bystanders in the busy Raghunath chowk in the heart of the winter capital.
