Jaya directed to appear in court on Oct 10

A special court in Madras on Wednesday directed former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa to appear before it on October 10 for questioning in the Rs 6.50 crore (Rs 65 million) coal import deal scam case.

Special Judge S S P Darwesh gave the order while giving a direction to another accused in the case, former Tamil Nadu minister S Kannappan to appear before the court for questioning on October 9.

The court directed other accused in the case to appear for questioning on October 8.

Besides Jayalalithaa and Kannappan, other accused in the case are former chief secretaries T V Venkataraman and N Hari Bhaskar and former industries secretary C Ramachandran and five others.

On June 16, 1999, then Special Judge V Radhakrishnan had discharged Jayalalithaa from the case. However, the order was subsequently set aside by the Madras High Court.

Later, the Supreme Court too upheld the high court order directing Jayalalithaa to face the trial.
