Red alert in Delhi following terrorist attacks in US

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

All important installations in New Delhi, including embassies, have put under heightened security and a red alert was issued by the Intelligence Bureau minutes after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, followed by reports of other attacks on the Pentagon and the state department buildings in the United States of America.

"We are beefing up security at all important installations. Special arrangements are being made at the US and Israeli embassies," Joint Commissioner of Police Suresh Roy told rediff.com.

According to sources, the Israeli embassy is being evacuated.

There has already been an unsuccessful bid to blow up the American embassy in New Delhi for which a Sudanese national Abdel Raouf Hawash and his Indian accomplice had been arrested.

The Delhi police said that Hawash was an accomplice of Osama bin Laden and filed a chargesheet against bin Laden and six others.
