Militant drives truck bomb into police camp

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden truck into a camp of the Special Operations Group of the Jammu & Kashmir police at Magam in the central Badgam district late on Thursday, killing a trooper of the Central Reserve Police Force.

Seven SOG personnel received serious injuries in the explosion, which shook the area.

Sources said the bomber, who also died in the explosion, drove the truck into the camp and rammed a building.

The explosion "was so deadly we could feel the earth beneath shaking", said one local resident reached by telephone.

Sources said the building was extensively damaged.

SOG personnel immediately took up positions in the camp and started firing. "The firing continued for nearly an hour. We took shelter on the ground floor," said Mohammad Subhan.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The injured CRPF men were rushed to hospital in Srinagar, where the condition of three is stated to be serious.

No one has yet owned responsibility for the bombing.
