Erring cops should be booked: Farooq

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said on Thursday that erring policemen accused of dereliction of duty should be booked.

The chief minister said that cowardice had no place in the police force, while referring to the dismissal of the station house officer of Poonch district on Tuesday for dereliction of duty during a recent militant attack, which led to the death of seven policemen.

Calling for greater coordination between the security forces and police for fighting militancy in the state, Abdullah stressed on the greater responsibility of the latter for emerging as a people-friendly force.

"The police has an onerous task of instilling confidence in the people," he told a joint meeting of the state cabinet and the district development board at Anantnag district.

The police must shoulder greater responsibility after the security forces concluded area-specific operations, he said.

Apart from handling the militants, the police had to deal with the civilians as well, which required them to be humane, he said.
