Militants storm Doda police lines, 1 killed

Militants of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba on Sunday evening stormed the heavily guarded district police lines Doda in Jammu region killing the lines officer and injuring 20 other cops.

A spokesman of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba phoned newsmen in Jammu to claim responsibility for the attack.

Police sources said two fidayeen squads forced entry into the DPL and hurled grenades and fired from automatic weapons on the policemen.

The sources said the LO, identified as Gian Chand Sharma, died on the spot while 20 others were injured.

The condition of six cops was critical, the sources said.

Senior police and army officials had rushed to the spot with reinforcements, they said.

We have sealed the Doda town," a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile in two separate incidents militants gunned down two suspected police informers at Tangmarg in Baramullah and at Ganderbal in Srinagar districts.
