The situation in the powerloom town of Malegaon remained incident-free on the second consecutive day on Wednesday, as district authorities further relaxed the curfew for two and half hours from 8.30 am to enable people to buy essential commodities, a senior police official said.
Inspector General, Nasik range, K S Shinde said curfew was relaxed to enable people to buy essential items like milk, vegetables and kerosene.
Meanwhile, curfew remained in force as a precautionary measure in Kalwan, Devla in Malegaon and Nampur tehsil in Baglan taluka of the district, where incidents of arson and stone-pelting were reported since Sunday night, police sources said.
The death toll in the trouble-torn district had mounted to 13 with the recovery of a body from the demolished place of worship at Antapur village, even as army staged flag march in Ajangawadhel, Nampur, Daharabad, Antapur, Satana, Thendode, Devla and Kalwan villages.
Malegaon had witnessed large-scale violence on October 26 when police prevented a group from distributing pamphlets, to protest US airstrikes on Afghansitan.
The enraged mob indulged in arson and violence, prompting police to open fire at several places, killing nine persons. Three others were stabbed to death, while 15 were seriously hurt.
An unruly mob attacked people, demolished the place of worship at Antapur and set on fire a few vehicles and kiosks on Tuesday evening following which curfew was imposed there, police said.
