Malegaon incident-free, curfew continues

The situation in curfew-bound powerloom town of Malegaon in the district, which witnessed large-scale violence and police firing since Friday claiming 12 lives, was tense but under control, a senior district official said on Tuesday.

Collector of Nasik Kishore Gajbhiye said no untoward incident was reported from any part of the town since Monday.

However, the indefinite curfew imposed on Friday continued.

Inspector General, Nasik range, K S Shinde said over 250 persons have been arrested in connection with arson and stabbing after State Reserve Police Force prevented people of a particular community from distributing handbills to protest US attack on Afghanistan.

Police had to open fire at several places to control the unruly crowd that claimed nine lives, while three were stabbed to death.

The violence had left several others injured, police added.

Gajbhiye said the situation in Devla and Antapur towns in the district, where curfew was imposed after violence on Sunday night, was peaceful.

Meanwhile, a bandh was observed in Devla tehsil town on Monday.
