Curfew continues in Malegaon, toll increases to 12

Curfew imposed in the trouble-torn town of Malegaon, which witnessed violence and subsequent firing by police on Friday continued on Monday, even as the death toll increased to 12 with three more person succumbing to injuries on Sunday night, the police said.

"The situation is under control," said Inspector General of Nasik range Khanderao Shinde.

Patrolling by armymen, State Reserve Police Force personnel and police continued even as a few incidents of arson were reported during the night curfew, he said.

Shinde said a few more persons were arrested taking the total number of people taken into custody to 137.

Repercussions of Malegaon riots were also felt in Ravalgaon, Vadner-Khakurdi, Vadel, Karanj-Gavhan in Malegaon taluka, where rioters set on fire shops.

In Kalwan tehsil town, leaders from both Hindu and Muslim communities have urged upon the people to maintain peace and help local administration in bringing normalcy in Malegaon.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal urged the inhabitants of Malegaon to extend co-operation to police, army and administrative authorities in maintaining law and order in the city.
