Lone militant killed, Budgam mosque siege ends

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The nearly 48-hour long siege around the Jamia mosque at village Panzan in central Budgam district ended on Monday morning after security forces shot dead the holed up militant.

Police said security forces and special operations group members on Monday morning stormed the mosque at Panzan, and after a fierce gun battle shot dead the militant who had entered the mosque on Saturday morning, after the army had mounted a massive operation to flush out militants from Panzan village.

The sources added the body of the militant has been recovered, and one AK-47 rifle was also found.

"Partial damage was caused to the mosque," said a police officer wishing anonymity.

On Sunday the security forces has fired several teargas shells inside the mosque to force the militant out of the mosque.

However, the militant in response had hurled a grenade and also fired from his automatic rifle, resulting in injuries to a special police officer.

The authorities had also sent two villagers inside the mosque to 'persuade the hiding militant to surrender'.

However, the militant refused.

Sources said the siege around the religious place has been lifted, and villagers have begun returning to their homes.

Many villagers had fled from Panzan following the mosque siege.
