Farooq calls for strikes at Pak terrorist camps

Binoo Joshi in Jammu

Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has said that military action against guerrilla bases in Pakistan is the only option left for India to rid Jammu & Kashmir of the scourge of terrorism.

"If the US can strike Afghanistan to avenge the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, why can't we take similar action against terrorists operating from Pakistan?" Farooq said in Jammu on Friday.

The chief minister said he had always maintained that "we should strike at the terrorist camps in Pakistan. I am saying a similar thing today."

He said the time had come for the Indian Army to smash terrorist training camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and other areas in the neighbouring country. "There should be no delay."

The chief minister said death and destruction in the name of jihad could no longer be tolerated. "The patience of the nation is wearing thin, after having seen bloodshed for the past 12 years."

"[Jihad] is a clear exploitation of religion by a few vested interests misguiding the youth and misusing their energies for creating hatred against other faiths in order to achieve their own ends," he said.
