Anti-US protests disrupt normal life in Kashmir

Five people were injured and 20 arrested during anti-US demonstrations on Monday in Srinagar, even as normal life was disrupted in Kashmir valley following a general strike called by various religious organisations to protest the American attacks on Afghanistan.

Groups of demonstrators shouted anti-American and pro-Taleban slogans, burnt tyres and clashed with police at various places in the city.

Police fired teargas shells and used batons to chase away the protestors, official sources said.

The clashes between police and demonstrators were continuing in some downtown localities. The protestors also pelted stones on Nowhatta police station, they said.

Shops and business establishments were closed in Srinagar and other major towns of the valley and all modes of transport also went off the roads.

Additional police and paramilitary forces were rushed to sensitive areas of the city and patrolling has been intensified in other areas to foil attempts by protestors to create trouble, the sources said.

There has been a wave of strikes and protests in Kashmir valley, mostly in downtown Srinagar, since the launch of the air strikes by US on Afghanistan.

On Friday, 27 persons were injured during clashes.
