Narendra Modi elected BJP party leader

Narendra Modi was unanimously elected leader of Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party legislature party at its meeting held on Thursday morning.

The outgoing Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel proposed the 51-year old BJP leader's name for the post, which was seconded by Suresh Mehta.

Earlier, Modi, accompanied by Patel, was welcomed by the party leaders at the venue.

Two central observers, Kushabhau Thakre and Madanlal Khurana, and state BJP president Rajendrasinh Rana were present at the meeting.

Chief Minister designate Modi has replaced Patel, following the decision of the central party leaders for a change in leadership after the party's defeat in the recent by-elections to Sabarmati assembly seat and Sabarkantha Lok Sabha seat.

Patel had submitted his resignation to the governor S S Bhandari on Wednesday and Modi is likely to be sworn in as the new chief minister on Sunday.
