36 die in TN hooch tragedy, 120 hospitalised

At least 36 people, including three women, died and over 120 others were hospitalised after consuming liquor allegedly mixed with methanol at Natham village near Panruti in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district on Thursday night, police said.

The condition of many of those being treated at the headquarters hospital in Cuddalore was still serious, Dr G Jayaraj, senior surgeon, district headquarters hospital, told reporters.

Eighteen of the 120 persons have so far lost their vision, he said.

According to DIG (Villupuram range) M Chidambarasamy, three policemen were placed under suspension, while 21 others of Pudupet police station were transferred to the district headquarters.

Three persons, including a woman, all sellers of the killer brew, had been arrested in this connection, he said.

The incident came to light when one of those who consumed the brew collapsed on the spot while others developed giddiness and nausea.

This is the fourth such incident in the state in the last three months.
