Puthiya Thamizhagam leader held on murder charges

Puthiya Thamizhagam (PT) founder leader Dr K Krishnasamy was arrested in Coimbatore on Sunday morning on murder charges.

Police sources said the PT leader was picked up from his nursing home-cum-residence in Kuniyamuthur, on the city outskirts, for his alleged involvement in two murder cases in 1997 and 1998.

He was charged with killing an estate employee in Naraikinar in Tuticorin district and the BBTC estate supervisor in Manjolai in Tirunelveli district, they added.

Later, he was shifted to the Kovilpatti central prison after being presented before remand officer, they said

Speaking to reporters before he was taken to Kovilpatti, the PT leader said that the charges against him were 'framed up' by the police.

He said he was innocent and the murder charges were framed against him at the instance of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (AIADMK) leadership as he was championing the causes of oppressed people in the southern districts.

Krishnasamy is spearheading a workers' strike demanding 20 per cent bonus for plantation workers in the district since November 13.

Consequent to the intensified strike in the estates in Coimbatore and Udhagamandlam, the plantation managements had declared a lock-out on Saturday.
