One killed, 23 injured in Srinagar blast

One person was killed and twenty-three persons were injured when a grenade hurled by militants at a vehicle transporting security personnel missed the target and exploded on the road in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, official sources said.

The explosion occurred in the Ghantaghar area of Lal Chowk, in the heart of Srinagar, around 1430 hours (IST), they said.

The injured have been admitted to the SMHS hospital and the six seriously injured have been referred to the Soura Medical Institute, the sources said.

However, no one has been arrested in connection with the grenade attack, the sources said.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In another incident, army personnel repulsed a suicide attack on their camp in Pulwama district on Friday night killing two Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants, a defence spokesman said on Saturday.

Two militants dressed in army garb approached the camp at Balipora in Shopian area around midnight and hurled grenades and fired at the guards with the intention of storming the camp, the spokesman said.

The army personnel returned fire killing one militant on the spot while the other fled to a nearby village, he said.

Troops immediately cordoned off the area and in an exchange of fire the second militant was also killed.

Elsewhere in the state, four militants were killed during search operations by security personnel and a special police officer was shot dead in Hatmullah area of Kupwara district.

While two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in Pattan area of Baramulla district, two others were shot dead in Chandpora in Badgam district.

Militants exploded an improvised explosive device on a bridge between Kulgam and Shopian damaging a vital road link in the valley.

Militants also ambushed a security patrol, injuring two of them, in Kandi area of Kupwara and fired on a BSF camp in Waripora in Badgam district, the spokesman said.

A civilian Farooq Ahmad Dar was injured in the Badgam incident, he said.
