PDP leader survives militant attack in J&K

Militants made an abortive bid on the life of a People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Jammu and Kashmir where four ultras were among five people since Thursday night, a police spokesman said on Friday.

Heavily-armed militants opened fire on the house of PDP leader Choudhar Mohammad Akbar at Wanpoo in Anantnag district on Thursday evening.

Police guards posted there returned the fire and foiled the 'nefarious designs' of the militants, he said, adding no one was hurt in the shootout.

Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, one of them identified as Ghulam Ahmad Malik alias 'Gazi', were killed in an encounter with security forces at Nasrullahpora in Badgam district, while an unidentified body was recovered from Brari Nambal road in Khanyar locality of downtown Srinagar, he said.

One ultra was killed in an encounter with troops at Sabzian area of Poonch district on Friday evening, while another was killed in Balakote area of the district on Friday afternoon.

The army smashed seven militant hideouts during intensified anti-militant operations at Choornar and Panjwa in the frontier district of Kupwara and Tarzaoo-Sopore in Baramulla district on Thursday night, he said.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including three under-barrel grenade launchers, 38 grenades, four IEDs and five remote control devices were seized.

Security forces apprehended a suspected militant from Adhwar-Banihal in Doda and seized an AK rifle, two pistols, six RPG bombs, a wireless set and some ammunition during search operations at Sanji Bagla and Mangola in Rajouri district on Friday, he added.
