Militants attack army
transit camp, 13 killed

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least 13 persons, including ten armymen, were killed and 30 soldiers critically wounded when militants attacked a heavily-guarded transit camp on the Srinagar-Jammu highway near Maitre Bridge Ramban on Sunday afternoon.

A senior police officer told this correspondent that two fidayeen militants hurled grenades and later rained bullets on the transit camp killing nine soldiers on the spot and injuring 31 others. One soldier, he said, succumbed to his injuries at the Northern Command hospital in Udhampur.

"The militants opened fire from a close range and tossed several grenades on the transit camp where the soldiers were having lunch," the officer said.

A spokesman of frontline Lashkar-e-Tayiba militant group identified the fidayeens as Abu Sufyan and Saiful Islam and said both managed to escape unhurt after the attack.

Three civilians, including a child, were killed in the crossfire between the militants and the security guards at the camp.

Four civilians injured in the attack were also taken to a hospital. The condition of two of them is stated to be critical.

DIG (Udhampur-Doda Range) Shiekh Owais Ahmed rushed to the spot with reinforcements. The area has been cordoned off and searches have been launched to nab the militants.
