Pakistan expels Indian High Commission staffer

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Islamabad on Wednesday expelled a staffer of the Indian High Commission apparently in retaliation to New Delhi declaring a Pakistani High Commission official persona non-grata after he was found engaging in espionage last week.

Devendra Kumar Gupta, who had been working in the visa section of the Indian mission, had been asked to be withdrawn within seven days, a Pakistan foreign office release said.

The release said, "Gupta has been found to be involved in activities incompatible with his official status as defined in the Vienna Convention of diplomatic relations of 1961."
