Three militants late Saturday night stormed a heavily guarded camp of the Rashtriya Rifles at Dialgam in southern Anantnag district and killed four soldiers.
Six other were injured in the attack.
Police sources said that the militants fired rockets and grenades on the camp of 36 RR at Dialgam and also fired indiscriminately. "The militants managed to enter the camp in the cover of fire," a police spokesman said.
The militants later fired on the security forces in the camp resulting in the death of three army men. The injured were shifted to hospital where one soldier succumbed to his injuries.
Security forces immediately encircled the camp. The sources, however, said that two militants managed to escape. One militant who was inside the camp continued firing from his automatic rifle on the soldiers surrounding the camp.
The army troops later killed the hiding militant.
A spokesman of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba phoned journalists in Srinagar and claimed responsibility for the attack.
He said three militants had stormed the camp, and added, "Of the three, two were Kashmiri militants of the outfit."
