21 killed in Srinagar bus accident

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least 21 persons were killed and 30 wounded when a Bandipora bound passenger bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Baramulla district of Kashmir on Saturday, official sources said.

They said the bus, which was overcrowded, left Srinagar in the afternoon. The driver lost control of the vehicle at Saderkote near Sumbal while negotiating a curve.

The vehicle rolled down into a 200-feet deep gorge, killing and wounding those on board, the sources said.

The sources said bodies of 20 persons had been recovered so far. They were being handed over to their respective relatives.

The sources said the injured were rushed to a hospital in Srinagar and the condition of fifteen was stated to be critical.

Senior police officers were supervising the rescue operations.
