Lone survives militant attack on house

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Senior executive member of the separatist conglomerate All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Abdul Gani Lone on Friday said he and his family escaped unhurt in an attack on their house in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) by unidentified gunmen.

Lone said gunmen sprayed bullets on his guarded house late on Thursday night. The police guards posted there returned the fire and the gun battle continued for some time.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot immediately and the area was later searched.

"The house suffered slight damage," a police officer said.

No one has yet admitted responsibility for the attack.

The state administration recently downgraded the security of Lone from 'Z' security to 'X' category.

"The decision to downgrade the security of Lone was taken after a thorough review by senior state police officials taking into consideration the 'threat perception', a source said.

Early this year, Lone was accorded 'Z' category security following his 'tirade against the foreign militants in Kashmir'.
