Malegaon peaceful, curfew relaxed for three hours

The situation in Malegaon, rocked by large-scale violence and arson since Friday last, was under control on Thursday, even as district authorities relaxed curfew for three hours in the morning.

Curfew was also relaxed following improvement in the situation in tehsil towns of Kalwan and Devla, where incidents of arson were reported since Sunday night, police said.

Police had resorted to firing in the air at Wakhari in Devla taluka and Malgaon in Malegaon taluka on Sunday after a mob indulged in stone pelting on a police party.

Thirteen people were killed -- nine in police firing and four in stabbing -- while 16 were injured in the arson following a pitched battle between police and a mob since October 26 over distribution of pamphlets, police said.

Army and State Reserve Police Force were deployed in Antapur, Wadner, Khakurdi, Satana, Devla, Taharabad, Balgan and Kalvan villages nearby Malegaon, they said.
